HOW PROFITABLE IS SUKUMA WIKI FARMING BUSINESS IN KENYA

1 acre of Sukuma wiki can yield between 8,000 – 24,000 kilos of leaf during a growth period of 9 months. Now suppose you sell a kilo of Sukuma-wiki at Ksh.30 at the farm gate you earn a gross income of Kenya shillings Ksh.240,000 to Ksh.720,000.

The above yield projections sound Too Good to be True?

They are not.

Just ask Angote.

The daily Nation ran his story of how he earns thousands of shillings from Kale farming.

Here below is his story.

The green leafy sukuma wiki (collard greens) plants stand about half a metre high and sway as the wind blows in Munango village, Vihiga County.

Christopher Angote, the owner of the farm, grows about 30,000 plants on his two acres. He spaces them 30cm from one crop to another and 60cm from one row to another.

A section of the farm hosts various traditional vegetables plants such as black nightshade (managu) and cowpeas (kunde).

“I have tasted the fruits of sukuma wiki and I can say only those who don’t know can despise it as a money-maker. I grow this crop that is widely consumed round-the-year,” says the former teacher, who has partitioned his farm into nine portions.

Angote, who used to teach biology and agriculture at Holy Cross Emalindi Girls Secondary School, is yet to transplant another 20,000 sukuma wiki seedlings of the Southern Georgia variety.

Vendors pick the vegetables packed in 70 and 90kg bags every Tuesdays and Thursdays for sale.

“I sell a sack at between Sh.2,000 and Sh.4,000, depending on the season, to traders who come to pick them from the farm for sale in Luanda, Ilungu, Chavakali, Mbale, Majengo and Kakamega markets.”

He says in a week, he collects between Sh.20,000 and Sh.36,000 from the about nine sacks he harvests.

“Sukuma wiki is profitable because one harvests for up to five months every week as long as you control pests and apply manure. The crop is easy to grow and manage,” offers Angote, who quit teaching to concentrate on farming.

“I start my planting by buying 1kg of seedlings for Sh.2,000. I then prepare the nursery bed by adding manure in the soil, which I do a month before buying the seeds and planting.”

The crop takes a month in the nursery after which he transplants them and top dresses with DAP fertiliser. They mature in another one month.

When you choose the right variety, you have already succeeded by 50%.

So how do you choose the right Kale variety?

First, you have to know the sukuma wiki varieties in Kenya.

And that is pretty easy because:

There are three popular varieties of Sukuma wiki/kale in Kenya.

1. The “A thousand-headed Sukuma wiki variety”

2. Collards Southern Georgia

3. Collards Mfalme F1.

I have grown ALL the three varieties and can state without blinking, “Collards southern Georgia is the best variety for Kenya.

The collards southern variety yields slightly less yield per acre compared to the “A Thousand Headed Variety” and the Mfalme F1 variety.

However, when you consider a combination of other factors of Collards Southern Georgia Sukuma Wiki, it trumps all the other kale varieties.

For example, Collards Southern Georgia variety produces pleasant dark green leaves. Its leaves are tough yet tender when cooked—which is an important quality when transporting it over long distances. The kale variety is also resistant to hot weather and it’s an all zone performer, unlike the others.

Should you maintain your farm well, you can harvest cash from this variety for over 1 year!

From that experience of growing the Collards Southern Georgia variety, I strongly recommend it to any prospective or even experienced farmer.

*Use the correct spacing to maximize yield Sukuma wiki/Kale per acre.*

This is where I have a problem with many academia.

They often recommend that you space Sukuma wiki at 60 cm X 60 cm.

The problem of adopting this spacing is that you get a plant population of 11,200 plants for 1 acre.

That plant population is too low to get high yields from Sukuma wiki.

Let me tell you why…

When you transplant Sukuma wiki at that spacing, as the growing season progresses, some plants die.

They may die due to pest attack, rotting, or injury as you do your farming operations.

When that happens you will end up having even wider spacing within the plants.

I know you are asking can I replant the spaces with new kale plants?

You could do it, but it’s not worth it.

The older plants tend to suppress the younger plants to the extent they won’t give any economic advantage.

On the other hand, if you adopt a spacing of 15 cm X 40 cm, you get a plant population of 59,000 plants.

The close spacing has several yields boosting advantages

1. You get more plants per acre than the spacing of 60 cmX60 cm.

2. Should any plants die during the growth period, you will still have an economical plant population left behind—you won’t have big spaces in-between plants.

3. The close spacing helps the plants to form a thick canopy that suppresses weeds and prevents excessive evaporation thus increasing your yield threefold.

*Ensure that Organic matter in your Sukuma wiki farm is high to Increase Your Yield per acre of Sukuma wiki.*

Sukuma wiki loves well drained soil, rich in organic matter.

Proper drainage is absolutely vital because excessive water leads to:

*Yellowing of leaves

*Development of phosphorus deficiencies

*Thriving of the black rot disease that can exterminate a Sukuma wiki farm in days!

Besides increasing your yield per acre of Sukuma wiki, soil rich in high organic matter well-rotted farmyard manure, compost, and other plants vegetative matter, will make your kale tender, sweet when cooked, and resistant to how weather.

You will see the outcome in the way people will be rushing to place orders.

Once they taste your kale, they will never want to go anywhere else.

Sukuma wiki responds well to fertilizers and foliar feeds thus increase yields significantly.

However, the extended use of such fertilizers is detrimental to your kale farm.

Continuous use of fertilizers will make your kale bitter and highly perishable—especially when used in the dry weather.

If possible, use organic matter such as manure and compost in kale production while supplementing them with inorganic fertilizers.

Never make inorganic fertilizers the foundation of your kale production especially in the dry season as that is the recipe for producing bitter kale.

*Never Ever Overharvest Your Sukuma Wiki*

Never overharvest your sukuma wiki if you want your Sukuma wiki to Produce High yields consistently.

Let me explain:

During the dry season, kale is often in short supply. What is available is usually bitter and tough when cooked. For that reason, sukuma wiki buyers wander to and fro looking for good sources of sweet kale. These buyers are OFTEN ready to buy GOOD, SWEET Sukuma wiki at Top prices. Farmers, therefore, are tempted to overharvest their kale farm in a bid to make an extra coin. Never do that. Don’t do it even if you are offered money. If you do it, your earnings will be short-lived.

Why?

You will over-stress the plants. The plants are already overstressed due to the heat and drought. When you add overharvesting, the plant will be truly stressed to regenerate new growth faster. The recommended harvest rate is 3-5 leaves per plant starting with the bigger bottom leaves. If the plant exhibits luxurious growth, (during the rainy season) you can harvest more than 5 leaves. When it’s too dry you may have to harvest 3 leaves per plant. One last precaution about harvesting . Never harvest the young tender leaves that are near the top. Start with the mature lower leaves. If you harvest the young top leaves, you will be harvesting tomorrow’s harvest today while leaving today’s harvest to go to waste. *Don’t harvest the same portion daily otherwise you will get poor yields of Sukuma wiki.*

If possible, harvest the entire farm once. After doing that, irrigate it and let it stay for a whole week before you harvest again. The advantage of doing this is, “You allow the plants time to recover from the stress of harvest.” If the farm needs weeding, pest control, and other activities, you can do that after you have done the harvesting. Should you be unable to harvest the whole farm, divide it into blocks. Harvest each block each day of the week. Once you harvest a block, don’t harvest it again until one week is over.

*Irrigate your kale farm regularly. Sukuma wiki loves a Lot of water*

To maximize your Sukuma wiki yields, ensure that you irrigate your farm regularly. Without regular irrigation, the vegetables will grow slowly and will be bitter. The yields that I have mentioned at the beginning of this article will be a pipe dream. The most preferable time to irrigate is in the evening. Irrigating at this time is advantages as evaporation is lower, thus you save on water.

The best type of irrigation system for Kale is overhead irrigation. Though it uses a lot of water, overhead irrigation creates a micro-climate for kale during the hot weather. The good news about it is that Kale will respond in kind by growing luxuriously.

*Finally,*

Here is The Secret to Making a Good Return from Kale/sukuma wiki Farming…Truth be told. Depending on the weather, prices of agricultural commodities (including sukuma wiki) plummet, or steeply rise. In Kenya, the price of Sukuma wiki tends to drop in the rainy season, and rise in the dry season. The secret therefore, for profiting from Sukuma wiki is targeting dry weather when it is in short supply.

There are times when the price of kale UNBELIEVABLY skyrockets to Ksh.2,000 shillings or more for a 50 kilo bag. Can you imagine what sukuma wiki farmers earn during those times?

You have the answer!

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A MAN IN A SOCIETY

I can recall the first time that I asked the question, “What does it mean to be a man?” to a group of young men.In this particular situation, the young men were sharing their feelings about an exercise that each of them had just experienced, focused on the sexism, and patriarchy that women often face in society.ile majibu nilipata ilikua ya kushangaza pia kufurahisha.

Many of the young men shared that they immediately wanted to cry after the experience. Upon asking them why it seemed that they were emotionless during the exercise, they shared that they didn’t allow themselves to exhibit such emotions because they needed to be strong for the other men in the group. The phrasing of “needing to man up” was used over 50 times, so much that I was not only exhausted, but perplexed.

It wasn’t the first time I had heard the term “kua mwanaumme, being used to describe the need that young men have to hide their emotions. I had been told to “man-up” by a family member after I said I didn’t want to play football (or any sport really). I was also told that I needed to “man-up” after I found out my best friend died in the 9th grade, again during my initiation ceremony that involved circumcision i couldn't endure the pain but every time you wil hear hey hapa lazima ukae mwanaumme.

I hear the phrase “man-up” used so frequently, I often wonder in what context the word “man” is being used and what it really says about how society views masculinity as a whole.

For years, I have grappled with this idea of maleness and masculinity from both a social and political lens. Society rarely provides space for men to be whole. Consider the “idea” of what it means to be a man in our society. When we define maleness, or masculinity, we are quick to assume that to be a man means being aggressive, loud, violent, and dominant. Even more, maleness and masculinity is often defined by one’s gender, their gender presentation, and how they perform maleness and masculinity. Something that I have always found to be disturbing is how much of maleness and masculinity depends on one’s genitals and what cis-gender men choose to do with said parts.

A common notion that is often not discussed when examining men and masculinity is how much emphasis is put on the performative aspect of being a man.

Very rarely are cis-men given space to interrogate and create a their own definition of masculinity that includes being emotionally/mentally sound and whole. Men often have to look outside of themselves for their first definition of what it means to be a man, so much so that it often leaves men in a dark and sad state of existence.

From sports to the playground, masculinity is coded with phrases like “boys will be boys” or my personal favorite, “that’s just how boys/men are.” The emotionally damaging “masculinization” of young men starts even before young men have a keen sense of self; often before they even have the developmental capacity to fully understand the binary (gender vs. performance of gender.) These gender roles and expectations of gender performance are often given out like candy, without a child being able to fully comprehend what they’re ingesting.

This notion that to be a man means being angry or emotionally unavailable has always been something that intrigued me. As both a queer and Black man, I often question where these ideas began and why people continue to hold them in such high regard. As I continue to battle with the true definition of what it means to be a “man” and how heteronormative (and homonegative) the definition continues to be, I recognize that the toxic notion of masculinity is forced on young cis-men before they even know how to properly tie their shoes.

I can remember hearing conversations between my mother and my uncles about how fearful they were for me because I didn’t exhibit the behaviors of masculinity. I was emotionally available, somewhat shy, and enjoyed connecting with people on a deeper level. Somehow, that was seen as effeminate and the men in my family worked tirelessly to “make me harder,” common rhetoric used in the Black cis-male community.

It behooves me to say that the root definition of what it means to be a man or to perform masculinity here in America continues to be grounded in oppression, marginalization, and white supremacy. As I have done my own work to unlearn the toxic nature of masculinity, I now comprehend that the harm being done to many young cisgender men, specifically young white cisgender men, is often connected to noxious ideals of power, positionality, and the want/need for cisgender men to be seen as a dominant gender. I am even more certain of this with the reports of gun violence transfixing us here in the U.S.

In challenging masculinity as a harmful and sometimes deadly social construction, we have to acknowledge that being viewed in society as masculine is reputed as a gift, while being viewed as feminine is a curse. Even with all of the negative ideologies of maleness and masculinity that cisgender men (and society) consume, being seen as a “man” means being free from critique and the need to unlearn elements of sexism and patriarchy, even in moments when you are the reason for someone else’s struggle and pain.

Films like The Mask You Live In and Tough Guise 2 examine the concept of performative masculinity and shine light on the lack of accountability that comes with maleness. They examine how young men are wired to “wage war” from a young age and encouraged to lean into concepts related to social dominance hierarchies. Cis-men, specifically cis-heterosexual men, are encouraged to take up any and all space, without questioning whether they are fully deserving of it.

A struggle that I have had as a queer cis-man of color is comprehending what maleness and masculinity means for me. I have never presented myself as a masculine. My voice is soft, I have always been called “pretty,” and I am highly emotional — all things associated with femininity.

Though I have every right to be an aggressively violent person because of the things I have experienced as a queer Black man, I have chosen to unlearn maleness and masculinity as something ferocious. In my quest to redefine maleness and masculinity, I have started to understand that being a man means doing a great deal of self work.

My definition of “being a man” challenges me to speak openly and honestly about my thoughts and feelings. It’s relearning how to speak from a truly genuine and unapologetic place. It’s seeking out regular psychological therapy — something that many cis-men, specifically cis-Black men are taught not to do. But most important, it’s knowing how to be honest with myself about about where my pain and trauma begin and working through it to heal.

Before challenging others to learn what it means to “man-up,” I would challenge everyone to unlearn what it means to be a man in our society and find a definition that allows cis-men to be happy, whole people. We must teach men not to see maleness and masculinity as superior to femininity, but dangerous without it. We must engage men to stop seeing their maleness and masculinity as being something that they should fear, while encouraging them to embrace their full authentic truth.

It is only then that we can truly create a healthier definition of what it truly means to be a man.

TOUGH DAYS AHEAD FOR KENYAN TAX PAYERS

There is a lot of exorbitance at the helm of power. Our taxation base is thin, and for an understandable reason, but we have to acknowledge the wastage up there.

The government cannot be inducing taxes and squelching revenue to the last cent on one hand; and overlooking the expenditure crisis. Corruption And mismanagement are eating away every parastatal. Our anti-graft authorities are frozen in midnight slumber and our public prosecutor is dropping cases faster than a blitzkrieg bombardment. Taxes are grim. Nobody loves taxes. Increasing them has been the center stage of fallen regimes and dismantled orders.

But what the citizenry hates most than taxes, is misappropriation. It is a sharp betrayal. The basic man is already struggling to make ends meet. The government is taking more and more everyday. It is the price of having a government, he concedes. But how does he feel when those tasked with managing his taxes are prioritizing their luxury and even the little set aside for one or two services, is not spared from theft.

I did not,and still don't, expect this government to be more prudent than the preceding ones. But if there is an iota of commitment to improve lives, just a rung higher, the government has to stop over-focusing on how to attain revenue but how to frugally manage and account for the little they are getting.

The greatest problem we have is not lack of revenue. It is not even bloated debt. It is wastage. Wastage.

 Wastage. And Greed.

billionaire mindset

"EVERY PROBLEM, hindrance or obstacle gives you a new lesson. Only then will you learn the hard way."

~Industrialist Narendra Raval on growing from a small trader to tycoon

Billionaire steel industrialist and philanthropist Narendra Raval, the executive chairman of Devki Group, has added a multi-billion shilling steel smelting plant to his business empire.

About Narendra Raval

Narendra Raval, is a Kenyan from Indian Gujarati origin industrialist, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He serves as the Executive Chairman of the Devki Group of Companies, a conglomerate that manufactures steel, aluminum and cement. Raval, who is popularly referred to as 'Guru', is one of the richest man in Africa (according to Forbes). He has investments in steel, aluminum and cement. Born in India 59 years ago, Raval served as an assistant priest at a Swaminarayan temple before relocating to Kenya as a teenager to serve in another temple. He was however expelled from the sect when he married to a Kenyan woman, and decided to take up a job in a small steel factory where he learnt steelmaking.

In 1986, pulling together his savings, he started a small steel processing and trading outfit with his wife in downtown Nairobi. That small operation has grown into Devki Group, the largest manufacturer of steel products in East and Central Africa. The $500 million (Sh6 billion in revenues) company manufactures cement, reinforcement bars, and barbed wire. The group's cement division, National Cement Company, manufactures Kenya's bestselling Simba cement.

A devoted philanthropist, Raval supports more than 300 children in different levels of schooling and a string of orphanages. In this interview, the 59-year-old Guru speaks about the new plant commissioned on Friday, 18 November 2022 by President William Ruto and Kenya’s industrialisation dream going forward.

Here are his tips on how to grow from a small to a big entrepreneur.

Excerpts...

QUESTION: "Tell us about the journey to putting up the new steel factory in Kwale..."

It has taken four years to build the plant. It is the first in East and Central Africa of this kind and size. It is going to produce steel from iron ore.

The capacity at the moment is 500,000 metric tone's of steel, which can in future be improved to one million metric tones. The plant is situated on about 300 acres in Kwale. It is going to employ 2,500 people directly. Presently, there are 1,000 workers from the local area. In two months’ time, we will go to 2,500 workers. We are already in production. The President opened it on Friday, 18 November 2022.

QUESTION: "Building a factory of this size is not easy. What are some of the challenges you encountered?"

The engineering works were a bit challenging. The funding has also been a challenge. The plant cost me $240 million [about Sh29 billion], which is the biggest single investment in steel in Africa in two decades. We have got teething problems, but we are overcoming them and the plant is now stable. The plant is producing its own electricity from the waste heat. The capacity of waste heat is 55 megawatts [MW].

QUESTION: "How important is this factory to Kenya?"

The plant is producing materials called steel fillets and wire rod coils. These are largely imported from South Africa and China. They will now be produced by Devki Steel Mills. This will save the country about $350 million [Sh42.35 billion] in foreign exchange.

QUESTION: "Devki has largely invested in building materials like steel and cement, but recently we have seen you are diversifying into fertilizer blending, aviation and packaging. What other sectors do you see opportunities in?"

Devki now believes in diversification. We have Mavuno fertiliser, which is a 40-year-old brand that we want to promote because the government is encouraging investment in agriculture. We are also diversifying into power generation by looking at waste heat recovery power in all our factories.

We are also setting up a wind power project which will produce 65MW. This will position our group as a green energy company in the coming years. It will make us more sustainable because energy is the biggest cost in manufacturing.

QUESTION: "Devki Group has its roots in the Gikomba market [Nairobi] where it started more than three decades ago as a hardware store. What advice would you give to a young entrepreneur aspiring to grow into a billionaire industrialist?" Everything you start, you start very small, but you have to dream and think big and work towards your goal. You should try and do one thing at a time and do it with your whole heart. You should not work on something today and then next year, you start something else. Don’t do trial and error. First, you need to dedicate time to do your research, then put your full commitment to it.You will eventually become successful.

QUESTION: "What is this one deal that you were so close to cutting, yet it slipped through your fingers?"

I was looking for this sugar company called Mumias. I worked very hard to put a deal together keeping in mind that I will run that company as part of my plan to go into the agricultural sector and make sure I change the lives of people in the Mumias area. But it never materialized after I saw there was too much political element in it. I came out because where politics is, we don’t board.

QUESTION: "Why not do a greenfield investment in place of leasing Mumias Sugar?" It’s not difficult to start a greenfield venture. I went into that deal because it is easier for me if I have a head start. I said if it doesn’t work, then definitely I can start a new one which we still would like to do. But in the meantime, I got the project for wind power with a capacity of 65MW which is bigger than that and we are now working on it.

QUESTION: "One would assume you have the government’s ear. What is this one piece of advice you gave the government that was ignored?" I put a proposal to the previous government that we have sufficient clinker [material for making cement] in the country, but Kenya is importing $250 million [about Sh30.25 billion] every year while we have the ability to produce and stop importation. The government never put any duty instead, the issue was politicized and duty never came. If the government does not move to protect local industry, that is slowing down the industrialization of the country.

QUESTION: "You have always insisted that every experience gives you the opportunity to grow…" Every problem, hindrance or obstacle gives you a new lesson. Only then will you learn the hard way. If you learn from books or watching or listening to somebody only, it is never going to give you the same result. So every difficulty is a big lesson and a big opportunity. When there’s a problem, there is something in it which can make you bigger. For example, the biggest problem of Covid in the whole world, created big opportunities in medical care, making masks, gloves and vaccines across the world.

QUESTION: "How have supply disruptions as a result of Covid and the war in Ukraine affected your factory operations?"  The disruptions largely affected the supply of raw materials and food commodities around the world. The cost of raw materials went up three times. So manufacturing activity became very challenging because people cannot afford to buy expensive items.

QUESTION: "What are some of the major lessons from Covid and the war in Ukraine for factories in Kenya?" We need to start becoming self-dependent now so we sustain ourselves if this kind of situation arises in future. This is a long journey but it is a very important lesson. As a country, we can sustain ourselves in terms of pricing and availability of raw materials by stabilising the supply-demand chains. We have to protect our local industry and agriculture to grow so that we become self-sufficient in food production and manufacturing. If we do that by encouraging local investments, even if supply chains are disturbed in future, we are not largely affected. At the moment, a significant share of GDP goes into import bills and paying loans.

This is partly because we don’t have a strong local industry that will help us become self-sufficient. We will never become self-sufficient if the current situation continues because we are heavily reliant on imports.

QUESTION: "What incentives are necessary for a company like yours to grow and expand?" The growth of the steel industry is always based on the development of the country. Kenya is developing, infrastructure is developing and low-cost housing is coming. But this will not be sustained unless they stop imports. Even if industries are here, people keep on importing and do not support local industries. Until that time when the industry is protected, we will not sustain local investments. We should not be exporting our jobs to China and India. We are importing everything including furniture and even kibiriti [match box] because we don’t have clear policies on importation. They have to put heavy import duty on the products we produce.

If they don’t do that, the country will always fail and local industry cannot survive. America had to put a 250 per cent duty on steel imports because they wanted to sustain their own industry. If America can do that, who are we?

POWERFUL POLITICIAN IN SOUTH AFRICA SENTENCED

In the modern world, more especially in Africa ,jailing a politician its not easy, our judicial systems are set in a way that, the innocent are made guilty and the guilty are acquitted and made weupe kama pamba,so in doing so, our cell are full of Romandie or prisoners' who are very innocent, they couldn't have enough at least to acquit them. this has been a trend until south Africa changed the narrative ,Zuma was finally in jail and sentenced.

"...At the heart of it (the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma), this tragedy is rooted in the enormous complexity of our collective decision to impose a modern constitutional democracy on what is largely a traditional, African feudal society.

"Former president Zuma is a traditionalist, totally unfamiliar with the concepts of constitutionalism, thrust into the role of president - whose primary duty is to serve and defend the Constitution. A total misalignment.

"He often said, including to me, that the concept of corruption was a "western thing" - and from his vantage point, I eventually understood what he meant.  Whenever I went campaigning in a traditional area of South Africa, under the control of a chief, I was first obliged to go and seek permission from the chief, and usually bring a gift to seek his favour. I always felt terribly uncomfortable doing so. After, all I did not have to ask anyone's permission to exercise a constitutional right anywhere in South Africa, let alone bring a gift to exchange for that "permission". But I was told every time that I had to do so, in order for the people to feel free to come to our meetings and listen to our message, and so I did.

"The idea that people are born with inalienable rights that no one can take away from them, and that elected leaders are there to protect and defend these rights, is indeed a 'western thing'. In traditional societies, the notion that the chief grants you favours if you seek his favour, is far more prevalent - and it is easy to see how this easily morphs into 'corruption'. The leader looks after his own, making the idea of 'nepotism' a very 'western thing' as well.

"Jacob Zuma didn't understand all this, and said so openly.

"I will never forget him wondering out loud, at an extended Cabinet meeting, how it was possible that judges could tell him what to do.

'I was elected,' he said. 'The judges weren't. How come they are in a position to tell me what to do?'

"This genuinely puzzled him, and he was not afraid to say so. It should have been predictable that he would end up in jail for contempt of court, even before his multiple acts of corruption caught up with him.

"At the height of the Nkandla scandal, when we could get no answers out of Parliament on this crucial matter of public interest, the DA (Democratic Alliance) decided to walk to Nkandla to see for ourselves. En route, hundreds of people poured out of their poverty-stricken homes and shacks to block our way, because they were protecting 'their president'.

"The irony struck me deeply:  Zuma had unlawfully used tens of millions of public money to upgrade his luxurious homestead, set amidst grinding poverty, yet the people there came out to defend their 'chief' instead of demanding accountability from him. He was their president.  He was entitled to use public resources, and receive gifts in return for favours.

"Perhaps more than at any other time, I saw the misalignment between the inherent assumptions of a constitutional democracy and traditional African cultures, which are more aligned to feudalism than the accountability that we demand from our leaders.

"The story of Jacob Zuma is one of the personal tragedies that arises from our attempt to take a shortcut through history - which is what we are trying to do in South Africa. The events of this week were a victory for constitutionalism and the rule of law - and in that sense, a huge step forward for South Africa. The enormity of these developments need to be recognised for what they are in our context.

"But back to the person who is Jacob Zuma. He achieved the pinnacle of power in a constitutional democracy, and used it like a tribal paramount chief - ending up in jail as a consequence.

"If I had his phone number now (and if I knew he has a phone in his cell), I would reach out to him too, and wish him strength and courage, as he did to me at my lowest ebb. Not because I think he has been wronged - he was accorded due process of law and must serve his sentence - but because I know Zuma, the person, not the politician."

OTTA HELEN MAREE (née Zille), known as Helen Zille, is a South African politician. She has served as the Chairperson of the Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance since 20 October 2019. From 2009 until 2019, she was the Premier of the Western Cape province for two five-year terms, and a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. The 70-year-old mother of five served as Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance from 2007 to 2015 and as Mayor of Cape Town from 2006 to 2009.

THE FAMOUS CHEPKUBE MARKET IN EARLY 80s and 90s

They called it “Black Gold” – and every night, especially between 1974 and 1978, trucks weighed down by thousands of bags of smuggled coffee rumbled along the narrow village roads of Chepkube on Kenya-Uganda border under the cover of darkness. "One reporter who travelled to Chepkube recalled that at the height of the coffee boom, prostitutes charged Sh500 a night from a low of Sh50. A bag of coffee cost between Sh400 and Sh500. A bush doctor had also opened shop at the center where he treated venereal diseases to first timers at Chepkube."

The coffee markets usually opened at midnight to the wee hours of the morning. By sunrise, it was over. As the illicit trade boomed, a new breed of carefree millionaires emerged in Kenya. It was a bonanza. The smugglers – a coterie of senior politicians, administrators, traders, and prostitutes - all hooked together by the cash-minting thrill, and at night, turned the once-sleepy village of Chepkube in Bungoma into a paradise - or simply: Black Gold City, as one newspaper called it.

WILD-GROWING ROBUSTA

It gave Ugandans, pushed to the limit by Idi Amin’s destruction of the once vibrant economy, a small window to barter their only remaining source of revenue – the highly priced Arabica coffee from Mt Elgon’s Bugisu District and the indigenous wild-growing Robusta. Two events had informed this trade at the border. On a cold night in July 1975, temperatures in Brazil’s southern coffee-growing state of Parana had plummeted to below freezing point destroying more than 70 per cent of the coffee crop.

In just these few hours, the world’s largest coffee growing region had been destroyed by the worst frost in recent history. This not only caused panic in the global coffee markets but the prices rose to double digit figures. Instantly, Kenya was at the center of attention.

On the Ugandan side, Idi Amin, who had taken power in a military coup had brought down the economy and squeezed the country of foreign currency. In July 1977, following the killing of Archbishop Janani Luwum, and the rounding up of all Americans living in Uganda, President Jimmy Carter imposed a trade embargo on Uganda’s $250 million annual coffee trade with the United States.

It meant Uganda’s coffee could only be sold through Kenya. Kenya’s sophisticated elite and traders took full advantage of Uganda’s troubles. With Amin’s soldiers always on the lookout, smuggling brought with it a new mode of transporting the cargo in small packages. It was the bicycle which moved from border to border across the no-man’s land evading customs and the soldiers. The word boda-boda arose from this trade.

The impact was huge. The years 1975 to 1977 the Kenyan economy boomed. In 1977, for instance the balance of payments recorded a surplus for the first time and it was a large one - Sh2.2 billion while the foreign exchange reserves reached a record level of Sh2.7 billion. The gross domestic product increased by 7.3 per cent in real terms while the number of people in paid employment increased by 5.3per cent. On the other hand, the supply of money went up sharply by 47 per cent!

The new coffee millionaires were not taxed after President Kenyatta personally refused to tax the incomes of the smallholder coffee producers during the boom period, leaving the windfall to the farmers. The decision made against the advice of both the IMF and the World Bank saw authorities receive nothing directly from the farmers.

ARMED WITH GUNS

The trade was risky and the coffee traders always went to Chepkube armed with guns. Take the case of Joseph Mararu. He was arrested in 1977 with eight bags at Chepkube and charged with driving an unregistered vehicle, disobeying the local chief, dealing with coffee without a license and keeping a firearm in an unsafe place. One reporter who travelled to Chepkube recalled that at the height of the coffee boom, prostitutes charged Sh500 a night from a low of Sh50.

A bag of coffee cost between Sh400 and Sh500. A bush doctor had also opened shop at the center where he treated venereal diseases to first timers at Chepkube. “The old-timers have learnt to stay away," wrote the reporter. Mudwalled coffee stores where the contraband was hidden had mushroomed at the center guarded by men armed with simis and hidden pistols.

One Saturday, December 18, 1976 things went badly wrong at Chepkube at about 4p.m. Some people reportedly broke into one of these mudwalled stores where coffee worth millions of shillings was hidden. The owners of the coffee arrived with armed hoodlums and a fight with simis and pangas ensued. When calm was restored 10 people lay dead and more than 40 injured. The local District Commissioner, Mr. George Mwangi, gave all non-resident traders along the border in the Mt Elgon Division 24 hours to leave. They refused. That is how Joseph Mararu was arrested and charged with disobeying the local chief! The gravity of the smuggling was exposed when Labor Minister, Ngala Mwendwa told a meeting that the smugglers were senior government officials. “They do it in Government vehicles and, by virtue of their positions, no one can question them. You just salute and let them pass… I am sure President Kenyatta is not aware of such people. “He is just being told that certain commodities are missing, but it is not explained to him why and how they are missing. Otherwise, he would have fired such people on the spots

Those who managed to smuggle their produce past the police roadblocks eventually used their Coffee Board licenses to pass the beans as genuine Kenya produce or export it on their own. But this was worrying Agriculture minister, Jeremiah Nyagah after he found that a coffee cargo that had been sold as from Kenya was found to have contained stones! Kenyan farmers must keep the world famous coffee quality standard to capture and retain competitive world markets,” said Mr Nyagah.

In Nairobi bars and hotels the smugglers washed down their “hard work." They abandoned taking ordinary beers and at worst they were at home taking Johnnie Walkers in upmarket Nairobi where they were acquiring properties or down in the coast where beach plots were snapped on offer. It is today estimated that between 1976 and 1977 over 30 per cent of Uganda’s coffee production about 70,000 metric tones was smuggled into Kenya turning paupers into instant millionaires. Kenya had a liberalized market – meaning traders could purchase coffee from across the border. The coffee smuggling routes had been known for many years.

Some Lake Victoria ports changed overnight from small fishing villages to entry ports manned by heavily armed cartels. Trading in Amin’s Uganda had been risky since his soldiers loathed Kenya traders. It was in this confusion in 1974 that Kenya’s politician Kûng'û Karumba disappeared in Uganda – never to be traced again.

Mr Karumba, a tycoon who owned a fleet of buses and lorries, was one of the Kapenguria Six who had been jailed together with Jomo Kenyatta. He was involved in the cross-border trade and had gone to Uganda on a business trip. But this did not dampen other traders when the coffee boom season commenced. It is estimated that of the 200,000 tones of coffee grown in Uganda in the three years, about 70,000 tones was smuggled into Kenya.

In 1978 two MPs, Mûhûri Mûchiri of Embakasi and Makûyû's Jesse Mwangi Gachago were jailed for five years after they were found guilty of stealing coffee worth Sh1.2 million while in transit from Malaba to Mombasa.

Then came the crunch. The coffee and tea prices fell in 1978. The heavy rains of that year reduced the coffee crop by 13 per cent. In just three years, the bubble burst. At the national level, Kenya used the boom to build a solid postal service, an airline, and railways.

THE ART AND THE ART OF LIFE

There's two types of art. Art that is surface level, and art that is deep. Because surface level art readily lends itself to function and utility (think supermarket paintings, touristy curios, mindless club bangers), it has value in the market, and at minimum, enables its own sustainability. This is not usually the case with deep art, art which comes from the collective unconscious and requires a level of sophistication and disposable income to appreciate and value. But because the capitalist system has everyone on a treadmill, there is neither the time, space, money or peace of mind to savor these latter kinds of works, yet they are the type that replenish societies. They enable reflection, they enable connection, they enable a certain oneness of thought on a higher realm, and with that comes oneness of purpose. This kind of art makes the society healthy and whole.

The enemy today is not the politicians, the enemy is the system we are operating in that has everyone on a treadmill. There's no space to be human. We don't savor life, we don't savor relationships, we don't savor friendships, everything is brusque and utilitarian. Everything is about the market. Its like we're always at the market, buying and selling, and then even the things we've bought, we can't enjoy, cause we're immediately onto thinking what next to buy or sell, and going off in search of these, leaving the hundreds of other things we have purchased, to rot behind.

But this is not about the system, this is about deep artists and what happens to them, living in societies that don't value them. 99% of the time they become dysfunctional and self destruct (suicide, alcohol addictions, drug addictions), or at the least, live lives of quiet desperation, sadness and lack of productivity,  because the ground they are standing on does not enable them to live out their purpose.

A poet who only wants to do poetry will be told time and again to forget about that nonsense and just grow up and get a job like everyone else. A dancer who only wants to dance will be continually lambasted for being irresponsible, being wayward, being rebellious, because they are not doing what her or his siblings are doing, going out to do the usual, known and respectable 9 to 5, that will keep the family name. The film maker who wants to make film will be told they think they are better than everyone else, that they are dreaming too big, that they had just better get with the program and adjust to the realities of the real world.

And here is where the problem is for these types of artists. They cannot adjust to the real world. It is impossible for them to. Because, to begin with, the realm they occupy is not the real world, it is the collective unconscious, the underworld, the metaphysical. Their purpose and programming is related to them channelling the wisdoms, messages and communications from the spirit world, up into the real world. Exhortations to these types of artists to 'stop being like that', while done in good faith are toxic and inimical to them. By telling them not 'to be' that which they instinctively know they are here to be, the seed of self alienation, self negation, self doubt and self distrust is planted within them. If they cannot be accepted by those who birthed and reared them, how can they accept themselves. If their inner instinct and voice is said to be wrong and untrustworthy, what really can be trusted? And so, they never get to stand on strong, steady, stable emotional ground.

To this psychological devaluation of their essence, then add the lack of environmental infrastructure to support the nurturing and cultivation of their dreams. The situation was much worse 20 years ago when even training schools for creative endeavors were far and few between, but still today, issues of lack of working spaces, …

ITS TIME FOR POLITICS AGAIN,KAMKUNJI AT IT AGAIN

so today Kenyans welcome baba back home after doing several rallies outside the country, recently he was in south Africa where he jetted and landed today morning hours ,The peoples president as the call him went direct to famous ground ,KAMUKUNJI GROUNDS ,there is so much to tell about kamkunji grounds ,but its a story for another day ,there is a big reason as to why baba makes major announcements either in kamkunji or kasarani.

kamkunji ground was full as early as the gates were opened ,what's funny today is unlike the previous tight security and teargas allover ,today it was calm ,no much security details around kamkunji more than the normal.

so when baba alipanda jukuani,as usual its ndio baba for every utterance he made ,so this are the bear minimums for Rutos administration.

It appears that Azimio la Umoja One Kenya, a coalition led by Raila Odinga, has announced that they do not recognize the legitimacy of the current Kenyan government, led by President William Ruto. This decision is based on allegations that the recent election was not legitimate. Odinga made eight demands to the Kenyan people, and stated that the coalition will not recognize any officials in office with Ruto.

Mr Odinga said the coalition demands  that the entire infrastructure and records of the 2022 elections at IEBC be made public and be audited by an impartial body -and that a forensic audit of the IEBC results and servers is non-negotiable.

" We demand that any attempts to reconstitute the IEBC single-handedly by Mr Ruto cease forthwith so that Kenyans themselves can reconstitute the body after full and fair deliberations," he said.

We reject the empty promises made and being made by the UDA regime, instead, we call on Kenyans to reject the punitive UDA policies that are making life unbearable, said the Azimio chief.

UDA, he noted, is resorting to such policies because it was not ready and did not get any mandate to govern.

Baba as usual ,he persuaded his followers to protest against many taxes imposed on them ,he further said "In particular, we call on Kenyans to resist and demand the removal of the punitive taxes that have led to punitive costs of basic products and services including unga, milk, sugar, school books, fuel, electricity, bus fare, paraffin and school fees."

"From today, we call on every Kenyan buying electricity tokens to take a very close look at the statement and see how much of your money actually goes into tokens, how much goes to taxes and how long are we going to live like this."

further finally said Hakuitakuwa na handshake, inshort baba is not after any hand shake whatsoever ,he reiterated that yeye hawezi tambua serikali iliyopo pamoja na hata mazaziri waliopo.

in a quicker rejoinder ,president willian in attendance of funeral today ,said he wont buy fear nor demand made by Raila,. as pressure mounts ,Kenyans remains at loosing end ,since the more we engage  in several rallies every now and then ,the worse for our economy.

WHY THE Es are employers of As TODAY.

it a surprise that most hospital owners aren't educated as their employee? it  may not surprise you either that the best garage in your town is owned  by class eight drop out but employs many form four leavers. many accountants and salespersons are graduates, they are either interns somewhere or they employed somewhere paid peanuts, while their employer a E performer in form four is using their brains and energy to create wealth.

Why does it sound like a surprise that E students employ A students? Could it kuna kitu we parent and teachers hatupati? ama kuna vile gava inacheza na future ya watoi wetu, mbona its possible kupata msomi walking bare footed pale kitongojini and the E s are driving high end machine living in palacial homes?

I worked for a class 3 dropout, who couldn't even write her name properly, as a retail store attendant in 2005 in Nairobi River Road (more details in memoir). The woman was one of the wealthy Kikuyu businesswomen (millionaires) who import goods from Dubai.

Right now there are politicians and various senior government officials whose level of education is still questionable even if they graduated high school or attained a college degree/diploma. They are holding offices and jobs that the graduates cannot get a hold of. Whereas the same graduates, some of them A and B students are wallowing in squalor facing lifes frustrations of poverty and unemployment.aki sometimes life treats us vitofauti.life has never been in balance.quite unfair kabsa.

During Moi's presidency, loyalty mattered to him more than education. It's why his government was full of illiterates the akina Mulu Mutisya, of "Noo suu"  wa ukambani and Onyono of "Migori water chwaa," and "Ndio Baaba" dude.alaaaa!¡

The police force was focused on recruiting young stout and agile men whose qualification was to have 32 teeth and prove that they are taller than an A-K7. Didn't some of those police recruits climb the ranks to be powerful members of the country's security forces?

How highly educated did you think the flying squad and special branch of the Kanu era members were? Didn't they stalk, harass and grab educated and respected individuals by the balls whenever they were instructed to do so?,that is why they could attack you na maswali ndio usipumue, usahau hata kuuliza.gichana umetoga wapi unaenda waoi umebeba nini acha kuniangalia by the time you open your mouth umekula slap kaa nane hivi....ahaaaa

What am I trying to say?

Observe, sit and listen.

Life is not a straight line. There are those A/B students who attained higher educations only to later on get their breakthroughs in talents or business.

Don't pretend like you don't know about exams rigging. Most of those teachers who are highly sought are sought because they are part of the KNEC board that sets and invigilate  national exam.

This story cought my attention...just read and read carefully a friend of mine from karachunyo who scored genuine B cos he feared kuiba exam.the reSt of the students then made their clean A s.

In my secondary school year, I was the top student in biology (Straight A student from form 2-4). I won 3rd prize in entire Rachuonyo District mock exams exams in preparation for KCSE 2003. Records are out there. Before exams, there were drills (revisions) we did, repeatedly. When the exam came. It was 95% the revision we have been doing. When the results for KCSE came, I, the A biology student, had a B, whereas some of the D and E students had As in Biology!

Miracle indeed.

I refused to participate in that cheating because I feared the exams might be cancelled and I didn't want to run a risk of not graduating high school.

More details in memoir...

Was I envious of my peers who got As in biology instead of me in KCSE, not at all. Because you can cheat in exams but you can't cheat life.

Let's all look at life with open eyes and mindsets. As or Es are just grades...Why does it sound like a surprise good that E students employ A students?

Let's all look at life with open eyes and mindsets. As or Es are just grades.as i pen this down this sunday morning am also reminded of my friend deskmate evans.tukimaliza class 8 those year when subjets were 7 yeye alipata yake 98 total out of 700.the guy currently is staying Rongai owner of of the best garrage in entire Rongai.sometimes yeye huniokolea.

Tukiendelea na hii tabia naona tukifika campus tunarudi kutafta kibarua kwa evans kwa garage.

Is the right time to change the paradigm shift

Is it the right time to think north

Yes i repeat yes.something must be done.yes..we must start treating the Es and As as equal on the table of opportunities

THE FUNNY AND UNIQUE 13TH PARLIAMENT

This shows that the 13th parliament will be a unique House as the majority coalition will not produce the Leader of Majority and Majority Whip and has not formed the government. All other after election, the majority had their say and their way .but for the first time, since independence .kutakua na majority ambayo hawatakuawa na uwezo wa kutoa uamuzi bungeni.

This is unlike the 11th and 12th parliaments that had Jubilee, the majority party in the Senate and the National Assembly, being the party forming the government. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party of Raila Odinga, Jubilee Party of President Kenyatta, Wiper Democratic Movement of Kalonzo Musyoka, Narc-Kenya of Martha Karua and Narc of Charity Ngilu are among the 26 parties that are legally part of the Azimio coalition as per the April 21 coalition agreement. The coalition is also joined by other parties like Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) of Alfred Mutua, United Democratic Movement (UDM) of Mandera Senator Ali Roba, Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) of Ugenya MP David Ochieng and Pamoja African Alliance (PAA). It should be noted that the coalition is called Azimio, it's a political alliance of the parties. It's important to mention that any agreement or coalition is subject to change, the parties can leave or join the coalition as per the political situation.

The document from the ORPP's office indicating the membership of UDM, MDG and PAA in the Azimio coalition comes despite these parties having signed post-election coalition agreements with Kenya Kwanza after filing objections regarding their membership in the Azimio coalition. This means that there is some ambiguity or confusion regarding the membership of these parties in the coalition. However, with 185 MPs, including five from UDM, three from PAA, two from MCC, and one from MDG, Azimio boasts of the majority in the 349-member National Assembly, compared to Kenya Kwanza's 152 MPs. This highlights the fluidity and dynamic nature of coalition politics and how it can change according to the political situation. The parties may have joined different coalitions in order to get more power to influence the government policies.

During the August elections, 12 MPs were elected as independents. According to the Political Parties Act, as well as Regulation 21 of the Political Parties (Registration) Regulation 2019, these independent MPs have the option to join a political party. The letter you mentioned, which is dated September 7 and signed by Ms Nderitu, lists the constituent political parties and effective dates for these independent MPs. This means that these independent MPs have decided to join a political party and the letter confirms their membership. It's important to note that the independent MPs have the right to join or leave any party as per their political will.

Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah is being mentioned as a probable leader of the Kenya Kwanza coalition in the House, with Saku MP Dido Ali Raso as his possible deputy. However, it is also reported that the Amani National Congress (ANC) is pushing for Vihiga MP Ernest Ogesi to be Ichung’wah’s deputy. The Whip position, which is responsible for enforcing party discipline and managing the party's legislative agenda, is likely to go to either Kisii or the Coast region. Two MPs, South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro and his Kilifi North colleague, are said to be battling for the position. It's important to note that the final decision on the leadership positions is not final until the parties agree on it and it is officially announced.

Stay put for more updates as they seek the interpretation from the high-count or find their own solution amicably in parliament, but as of now ,much is expected from. this parliament.

OPPOSITION MPS COME IN AID OF HUSTLERS IN THE CURRENT BUDGET ESTIMATE

National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi has called on the President of Kenya, Ruto, to spare Kenyans from heavy taxation. He specifically mentioned taxes on books and e-books, taxes on music on Spotify, and taxes on video streaming on Netflix as areas where the government should remove taxes. He believes that these taxes disproportionately affect the most active and vulnerable segments of the population, such as performing artists and the youth in colleges and universities. The idea is that these taxes make it harder for these groups to access information and entertainment, and that removing them would help to promote education and creativity.

National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi also added that artistes should not have to pay extra taxes on their music when the government does nothing to develop their talents. He believes that young people who are struggling to finish their education and those looking for jobs should also not have to pay more to listen to music and watch movies. He argued that these groups need a reprieve and that the government should not be placing additional financial burdens on them.

Similarly, Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli also expressed concern over the government's move to gather intelligence on people's usage of mobile money. He said that it is an ill-advised move and that it would make many Kenyans shy away from using mobile money platforms. He believes that this would have a negative impact on the Kenyan economy.

Cotu Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has advised the government of President William Ruto not to hurt Kenyans in their efforts to collect enough taxes to implement the promises in the Kenya Kwanza manifesto and make Kenya economically independent of external debt. He believes that the government's move, as outlined in the 2023 Budget Policy Statement, to have access to and investigate mobile money transactions, such as M-Pesa, is ill-advised and counter productive.

He argued that the majority of mobile banking users are hustlers and the poor who overwhelmingly voted for this government and if the government moves forward with this plan it would ultimately make Kenyans avoid using mobile money platforms, as a result destroying a great innovation that has helped ease the movement of money, especially from the urban to rural areas. He also said that the government should not target the poor in their efforts to collect taxes and it is important for the government to find other ways to raise revenue without hurting the most vulnerable segments of the population.

Cotu Secretary-General Francis Atwoli believes that if the government moves forward with its plan to investigate mobile money transactions, Kenyans will start avoiding the use of mobile money platforms and may start using other platforms like courier and parcel services to send money. He said that rather than monitoring and investigating M-Pesa transactions, the government should ensure that more than 5,000 outsourcing companies regularize the employment terms and conditions of work for their employees by ensuring they pay all the statutory deductions including PAYE, NSSF, and NHIF.

He also suggested that if the government wants to double the country's revenue, it should formalize many jobs in the informal sector and by clamping down on these companies that out source labor, they will collect the much-needed taxes to operationalize some of the promises in the Kenya Kwanza manifesto. He also urged the National Treasury, and by extension KRA to think innovatively and creatively and adopt more sophisticated measures to raise taxes for the government. He believe that the world of work is changing and the government should not adopt simplistic measures such as snooping on mobile money transactions to raise taxes for the government.

TOUGH DAYS AHEAD FOR HUSTLER AS THIS YEAR BUDGET APROXIMATION

And among the winners are jobless teachers who are expected to fill 30,000 vacancies in an anticipated recruitment drive, farmers who will benefit from an extended fertilizer subsidy, security officers who will see their perks improved and traders as the government steps up disbursement of the Hustler Fund.

Integration of Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) systems with those of telecommunication companies to snoop on mobile money transactions is yet another step by the taxman to widen the tax net, having rolled out a similar plan for betting and gaming companies last November .they will be a showdown in parliament when proposed budget will be discussed intensively , Mwanainchi expect to be given first to be considered.

M-Pesa users, landlords and consumers are among the biggest losers in President William Ruto’s Sh3.641 trillion budget that seeks to introduce new tax measures and end state-funded subsidies. For every coin sent or received through online platforms will be subject to taxation.

Ruto's priorities

The National Treasury on Wednesday published the draft 2023 Budget Policy Statement (BPS) for public comments, and the key policy document now reveals Dr Ruto’s priorities in his first budget that covers the financial year 2023/24.

The Treasury expects to collect Sh2.89 trillion in revenues in the 2023/24 financial year to fund this spending, a 15.1 per cent increase from the estimated Sh2.51 trillion to be collected in the current financial year, which will be supported by a retinue of new tax measures.

“The government will scale up revenue collection efforts by the KRA to Sh3 trillion in the financial year 2023/24 and Sh4 trillion over the medium term,” said the Treasury.

Energy has also emerged as a major loser, with its spending cut by Sh7.35 billion to Sh77.79 billion from Sh85.14 billion, while Public Service will have to do with a budget of Sh22.1 billion compared to Sh25.18 billion it was allocated in the current financial year.

Another loser is Crop Development, which has been allocated Sh26.13 billion compared to Sh35.7 billion this year, and Housing, which has been given Sh16.94 billion down from Sh20.04 billion.

Dr Ruto faces a fiscal deficit of Sh695.2 billion, a sharp drop from this year’s projected deficit of Sh849.2 billion, and plans to plug it through external loans of Sh198.6 billion and a further Sh496.6 billion in domestic loans.

Should Raila go for another handshake?

Raila odinga has refused to accept that he lost the last election he maintained that it was stolen he did pledge to his supporters that he would provide a way forward this month so when I read the Daily Nation my question is this because if  raila odinga's side that actually they say raila rally lead us in nyanza to embrace the president in your expert analysis would the leadership of nyanza rolled out have the red carpet regardless of Raila's position.

think it's very difficult, people like orengo can actually roll out the red red carpet the way you put it for a man they believed in during the election they have had very strong words about the election.

the bottom line is ,president william Ruto has declared no vacant room for handshake, on the hand Raila secret card is still held within his armpits, now that we have new whistle blower from iebc, Raila may have upper hand on this if he could use his tactics well.

The failures of Raila is all around the people whom eat with him and around his table of advice, I guess they are not technocrats nor political gurus who can crack the secret and reveal the answer that will help Raila come back. all eyes as of now are awaiting for the white smoke from orange house upper hill when finally baba lands in the country.

IF at all Raila will go for a hand shake will be the beneficiaries? Who will be looser? of course son of mau mau riggy g has already declared war on Raila, the brigade from western region is gun blazing against handshake, Nyanza point men have already shown interest in working with the current government, there is a lot yet to be seen,

BABA THE ENIGMA POLITICAL LIFE CIRCLE

In the year 1982 Raila amollo odinga alias baba was detained by Moi era on treason charged, he was detained for period of 6 yrs until 1988 when he was involved in multiparty campaigns ,in 1990 he was rearrested but later released after one year Later in 1991 he fled to Norway over assassinations' fears.

in the yr 2008,Raila Odinga became the second prime minister following the truce between Mwai kibaki and odinga which was made possible by Koffi Anan. Things couldn't go well as planned that made Raila opt out and continued his journey of clinching the presidency.

Maraga directed a repeat of election which baba didn't agree unless his minimum requirements were met of which were impossible, election was was repeated but baba didn't acknowledge its result either since he didn't participate, Raila went ahead and swear himself as the peoples president.

Railas spirit of becoming president of republic of Kenya was alive and strong, in the year 2018 he reconciled with uhuru and shook hand before millions of Kenyans the handshake developed enemy between the president and his deputy Mr. Ruto . It didn't end well since the president backed up Raila for the fifth stab in the top seat..

2022 was the year for Raila,it was a do or die political events ever witnessed in kenya, Raila went all his way to convince the mountain that he was the chosen liberator ,he traversed the country seeking votes in all 290 constituencies and 47 counties of Kenya, everyone was convinced that it was time for baba, AZIMIO LA UMOJA was the bus to take us to that promised land Canaan ,even me here bonface nyakundi had prepared for babas win, the blue code dress was allover kenya, blue was the color ,on the other hand Ruto UDA party were prepared much  ahead of even deep state.

I will just leave this here because the more i keep writing this the more emotional i become and i end up writing what i didn't intend ,to cut the story short , Ruto outsmarted the whole brigade of Azimio la umoja ,Baba again painfully lost...

FOUR PROVEN WAYS TO MAKE MAKE MONEY

Almost everyone on the planet makes money one of these four ways. Many many variations, but fundamentally four ways. Number one, you can make money by working. You can make money by Working. Either as an employee or working for yourself. Self-employed, you're trading your time for money.

This is even true for high income earner, like a doctor, a lawyer. Essentially working, make money by working. And as a worker, there are only two ways to increase the amount of money you make Either by working more hours, or you develop new skills. You're becoming more valuable. Go back to school, get more education, Now they can manage the people who manage the machines You could do that.

The second way you can make money is by selling. You can make money by selling things. Of course, that's what we do. As a closer, as a copywriter, could be as a digital marketer. As a closer, the money you make does not depend so much on the time you put into it, because could you put a lot of time on the phone and not make anything. Now could you be making 2000, 3000 dollars in 30 minutes.

It's not determined by your time that you put into it. but determined on How good you are at closing, the size of your commission, and the price of the things that you sell. Making money by selling, how good you are at closing, the size of your commission, the price of the things that you sell.

This is why to generate significant income as a closer, we focus on High ticket. Because we know we can get to a significant income with less, fewer transactions. That's why the blue ocean, that's where that comes in. Because I will see, once we get the understanding, like the why behind certain decisions.

Number three, you can make money by owning things.by owning assets. If you own an income producing asset. Like maybe rental real estate. You can make income. Make money from your rental income. If you own and run an active business, you know how to lead, how to build a team, you can make money through its profits. Because the money you generate from a business is not called income, it's called Profit

You can make money by lending. You can make money by not working harder. Or even acquiring high income skills. Or even with profits or salary, you can make money on the money you lend. On the interest you charge for that money. Now we're talking about banks.

  • Private equity.
  • Venture capital.
  • Angel investors.

There are many variations of the four, but basically those are the four. Pretty much the four. So what does that mean to you? It means this .The most efficient way and most effective way to build wealth, and this is especially true if you're starting from zero. If this. Is, you got to move from worker ,to being a closer, a sales person ,to owner, and eventually, once you make enough money ,to being a lender .Kind of operating like your own bank. You're making money on the money. That's really it. Creating wealth is not that complicated.

BAD NEWS TO KENYA KWANZA AS INTERNATIONAL BODY DECLARES RAILA ODINGA 2022 WINNER

Thank you all ,as  i welcome you again to our table of politics,  today we have a  lot to discuss ,the ups and downs of todays politics ,well l ,today something was leaked out, the political kitchen of Kenya today is in not bearable any more ,the delicacy has changed and political chefs are not ready for the duty yet.

some how we were almost silent about the super election of august 2022 up until recently when IEBC whistle blower leaked serious information alluding that Raila Amollo Odinga was the winner .so lets delve in and see what is at hand with kenya kwanza and azimio la umoja...

Kenya Kwanzaa is in panic ,an international organization working very closely with IEBC Insiders yesterday released their results showing that Odinga actually won the 2022 general election according to their figures oOdinga garnered 8.1 million votes  against William Ruto's 5.9 million votes and IEBC had declared William Ruto the president of the Republic of Kenya by 7.1.8 million votes against Odinga 6.94 million votes.....

OK ,For today lets look at two main things, the first thing I want to look at briefly is what these guys are saying ,and then in the second part I'm going to explain the implication of their findings because I've actually been wondering why William Ruto would from nowhere wake up and start defending of Chebukati, and IEBC as if something was cooking.

Indeed William Ruto just like Mad Men was running without anybody chasing him that's why he was busy defending wafulla Chebukati.through Dennis Itumbi Facebook page because yesterday Jeremiah kioni actually addressed the Press today as the new leaders led by kalonzo musyoka ,Martha karua ,also addressed the press and they indicated that once Odinga  lands into the country from South Africa another bombshell is going to be Unleashed.

Vanguard Africa is a regulatory document filed in USA and signed by Jeffrey Smith confirmed they offered Raila campaign advice so which means this group is happily strategist and in case in case they offered reloading advice it means they are credible enough to release this data and I don't want to get into all those details because things are going to unfold reloading as always promised  Kenyans that he will speak he was still waiting for these other guys to speak so let us wait and see what fellow Odinga will bring and in Azimio's press statement which they released and I'll do a comprehensive analysis let me just show you very briefly their statement what their statement is saying very briefly just a few paragraphs so that you don't waste a lot of time the statement says.

Yesterday Kenyans under the world woke up to this startling revelation of the 2022 presidential election results by IEBC whistleblowers the data released by The Whistleblower is a bombshell that compares every Kenyan of Goodwill to ask themselves if indeed we still have a democracy according to AZIMIO LA UMOJA one Kenya the data calls for the data calls into questions the outcome of the presidential elections and The credibility and legitimacy of our entire electoral system and infrastructure leadership with its members will fully deliberate and discuss this data and provide the country with the next course of action they are saying there are more revelations in our position that will ran up the field in the 2022 general election this was not an election but Hashem we want to commend the IBC whistleblowers who now enjoy full protection under the law for bringing this to the public these are the real heroes The whistle blowers are Gallant Kenyans and Parties who have taken this action at a great risk to themselves and set an excellent example of the true meaning of patriotism I'm going to to do another compressive analysis about that particular statement

in the report of whistle is  saying that form 34 B results from 46 constituencies were never transmitted then the question is which forms were really transmitted E46 constituencies were never transmitted I Remember by the time IEBC were making the announcement 26 consequences had not transmitted the results they are also saying that a total of 3996 form 34 is never received you know from 34 is were the ones which were being filed at the polling stations..3986 were never received that means the ones that were virtually transmitted were fake ,some consequences transmitted more than two from 34 is I mean from 34 is of book 2 so remember in his schemes printed from 30 4A.

the report is very long that we may take several days to analyze, the political game button is now set on, the wrangle and the rambles of the game is up, what we are now waiting is to see how the two protagonist will unfold their magic political fist.

Raila is set to jet in this week with much comprehensive report on the same as said by kalonzo musyoka today, our eyes are set ready for the game ahead.

Kenya is taking over Africa with these projects...

Kenya has made significant investments in the improvement of its infrastructure under, President Uhuru Kenyatta, particularly in the area of transportation and democracy in politics. To ensure the success of the projects and that Kenyans eventually get to enjoy the benefits of their tax payments, the nation has borrowed substantially from external partners as part of these investments.

Kenyans will eventually benefit from the speed that these projects will make available once  ,however if politics of deceit will be portrayed in every season, then all what Uhuru has build for vulnerable Kenyans will be hogwash.

Some projects are only developed under {PPP} Public-Private Partnership conditions .At the very least June 2022 is the projected completion date for the projects. According to BMI Research, Kenya’s mega-construction projects would contribute to an increase of 8.7% in the country’s construction industry growth from 2017 to 2026.....

JUST TO GIVE A SNIPPET OF WHAT UHURU HAS DONE

From the top most to least,,,

Konza Technology City.

One of Kenya’s top ongoing megaprojects is Konza Technology City. The Eastern region of the country is where the smart city project will be implemented. The project, which is a component of the nation’s Vision 2030 plan, is projected to result in approximately 17,000 high-value direct jobs and an additional 68,000 indirect jobs once it is complete The “African Silicon Savanna” appellation refers to the project, which is 64 kilometers south of Nairobi, as being modeled after the US Silicon Valley. It targets light manufacturing businesses, contact centers, business process outsourcing, software development, data centers, disaster recovery facilities, and academic institutions. The projects cost $14.5 billion USD.

The LAPSSET Corridor Program.

The program, which connects Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan, is the biggest and most ambitious infrastructure project in Eastern Africa. The estimated cost of this mega project, which consists of seven important infrastructure projects, is more than US $13 billion.

Northlands City.

It is located around 15 kilometers outside of Nairobi’s downtown and is one of Kenya’s top megaprojects currently under construction. The 11,576-acre parcel in Ruiru is where the mixed-use development plan is located. The Kenyatta family owns the entire plan. The project’s fourth quarter, which began in 2018, will see the plots connected to roads, electricity, sewerage, water, and the internet. The entire development will take place over the course of four phases, each lasting more than 50 years. An estimated $500 billion will be spent on it.

Tatu City.

Tatu Metropolis is a 5,000-acre, over Sh220 billion new city with facilities for over 250,000 people as well as thousands of day visitors, including schools, clinics, residences, offices, a shopping district, parks, and manufacturing spaces. Tatu City has a variety of dwellings as well as open businesses and schools.

Kenya Standard Gauge Railway.

At a cost of $9.9 billion USD, Kenya is constructing a 969 km standard gauge railway from Mombasa to Malaba. One of Africa’s biggest and most ambitious transportation infrastructure projects, according to reports, is this one. Phase 1 of the project, which runs for 472 kilometers from Mombasa to Nairobi, was finished at a cost of US $3.27 billion, while phase 2A, which runs for 120 kilometers from Nairobi to Naivasha, was built for US $1.5 billion. The estimated cost of moving the railway line to Kisumu is US $3.7 billion.

Nairobi – Mombasa Highway expansion project.

A dual carriageway is being built on the two-lane Nairobi-Mombasa Highway to relieve the growing traffic jams between Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and Mombasa, the country’s main port city. The Nairobi-Mombasa highway is thought to be used to transport 95% of the cargo from the seaport of Mombasa. The project is estimated to cost $3 billion USD.

Nairobi Expressway.

The China Road and Bridge Corporation is building this 27 km long highway. It begins in Mlolongo and runs through Waiyaki Way to Wetlands, connecting JKIA and the CBD. The road is being built by CRBC under a public-private partnership (PPP), with a 30-year concession duration and a three-year construction phase. The approximately $560 million road project is Kenya’s first significant PPP-developed project, and it will be finished in 2022.

Mombasa Port Expansion.

The second container terminal at the Mombasa port is being built as part of the project. The project was slated to begin in January 2018.Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) received a $339 million loan from the Japanese government to fund the project in late 2017. Phase one has a handling capacity of 550,000 TEUs and was finished in September of last year. The container’s second phase will increase its capacity to 450,000 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit.

Pinnacle Towers.

The project is situated in Upper Hill, a rapidly expanding financial hub in Nairobi, and is being spearheaded by two significant investors with headquarters in Dubai, Hass Petroleum and White Lotus. The 900-foot-tall twin Pinnacle Towers will feature 70 floors total, featuring Africa’s highest viewing deck, a helipad, a 45-floor Hilton Hotel, 20 floors of offices, 200 residential units, a gaming zone, a 3-floor luxury retail, and basement parking. The project is expected to cost $200m in total.

Kenol-Isiolo Road.

When the Sh16 billion Kenol-Marua portion of the road project began in July 2020, plans for the dual carriageway received a significant boost. The 84-kilometer Kenol-Marua section of the 219-kilometer highway will be built first ,followed by Marua-Isiolo (135km). The entire project is expected to be finished by December 2023.In His inaugural speech, his excellency president Ruto the fifth president of Kenya , assured Kenyans that he will continue with project that were underway by predecessor Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta.

THIS ONE DOESN'T NEED A LAWYER

 A very wise guy indeed...

On Wednesday, 11th January 2023, a suspect at the Mombasa Law Courts accused of stealing a KCB ATM Card, academic transcripts, a degree certificate, and a HP laptop valued at Sh45,000 belonging to his girlfriend, treated court users to a rare comic session.

Wycliffe Mungo (pictured), appearing before Mombasa Principal Magistrate Vincent Adet, began by complimenting the Magistrate's looks and by asking him where he bought his nice suits.

"Your honour first of all good afternoon and secondly allow me to compliment you for being so handsome. Your black suit seems to be from Nairobi and yourself l believe you are from there too. You appear smart and handsome. I trust you are from Nairobi. Those from Nairobi look like you. Your black suit and tie must be expensive..."

He went on bruising people's ribs by informing the court that there was no way charges of stealing would have been pinned against him since the complainant was his girlfriend.

"The complainant in this matter is my girlfriend. The items were found in my possession since we used to live together and we have been dating since we were in the university. In fact, your honour, when the police came into my house l informed them that they should also take her clothes and shoes to court." Mr. Mungo said.

To prove his intimate claims on the complainant, he went on to speak; "I have seen how you conduct your proceedings. Ask the officers why they left her under wears in my house. This is part of the evidence that should be used to acquit me."

His case will be mentioned on Tuesday, 31st January 2023.

PROF PLO LUMUMBA GREATEST SPEECH THAT GOT NIGERIAN LEADERS CRYING

In as much as i like politics and leadership, have never liked how prof Lumumba does his more than i do now, was just reading his speech and I see a son of the soil i see the light of Africa, I see a future in him, I took time to just go through just find time and read carefully and let your mind see the Africa that all of us dream of.

" permit me also to recognize the family of the late Dr abubakar saraki and permit me for good order to stand on the protocols already established let me say how glad honored and privileged I am to be invited to deliver a memorial lecture on the 10th anniversary to commemorate the departure of Dr abubakar or lushala saraki any Keen student of African politics and I claim to be such a keen student would have had of Dr saraki and I had heard of him before this invitation I don't so hard the honor and privilege of meeting foreign when he was the president of the Senate and he granted me the opportunity to address the Senate then that is not to forget that my good friend also granted me a similar occasion in the House of Representatives.

I'm glad to deliver a lecture to memorialize an individual of whom it can be said that he was a Colossus who bestowed the Nigerian political Terrain and made this contribution in a manner that makes it worthy to be remembered favorably I say so because there is no shortage of individuals who come and go and their memories are not worth much we have had the honor and privilege of seeing the Snippets of what he did during his lifetime and if it is true that one is not successful until his successor succeeds  then Dr saraki was successful ,he was successful because his successors have succeeded and they continue to succeed ,if it is true and that men and women is dead are recognized for their positive contribution to society, then it is true that Dr saraki was a man worthy of Celebration.

I'm glad to be in your distinguished presence to deliver a lecture in his memory , that lecture Focus on the critical question of leadership in Africa and the critical question of followership in Africa .The Africa that I talk about is the postcolonial Africa the Africa which is now divided into 55 countries with 55 boundaries imposed on her an Africa which is famous as the Cradle of mankind and Africa which is said to be great in Prospect an Africa about which there is much expectation but on Africa which continues to punch below her weight that is the Africa that I will be talking about as I focus on the question of leadership and followership as I think about that Africa and her leadership and fellowship and I think about her often as all of us should the words of a book that I read as a youngster come to mind and any one of us who had the opportunity of reading the book, A

Tale of Two Cities we remember as these words it was the time the best of times and the worst of times it was the age of wisdom on the age of foolishness ,it was the epoch of belief and the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light and the season of Darkness, it was the spring of Hope and the winter of despair .Those words Define the mother continent .

As we live in heart today those who commentate about the continent never tired to say that this is a great continent those who care about this continent never tired to remember that this continent divided our shears ,had many leaders and when I allow my mind to go down memory lane, I can remember so very vividly ,The Immortal words of many great African leaders on the eve of our regaining our   many of us can see pictures of young African whether in Nigeria or Ghana or Algeria or Kenya or Tanzania celebrating, when we regained our independence ,and many of us can remember the words that they spoke and the promises that they made. If it was in Nigeria here ,you can remember the immortal words about what they would do to Nigeria of namdi aziki, where you can remember those words, you can remember the promises, you can remember the erudite words of the saudana of sokoto ahmadu.Bello and the promises he made and many others.

when they spoke then those who I am sorry in them the similitude of Moses in the Bible they thought of their leaders and saw their leaders as Messiahs who would bedazzled Latter-Day pharaohs with miracles ,who would liberate them from the Egypt of poverty and one who would cost pillars of fire to stand between them and sorrow and one who would park the Red Seas of tribalism and ethnicity who in times of hunger, would summon Manner and quail from heaven that is what they thought of their Leader's Messiahs, but today permit me to say many, African countries they are saying it was better while we wait and it was better while we waited there is our sins in which through out the continent of Africa there has been disappointment with leaders at all levels so that when on the eve of Independence.

We wanted to come home now that we regained independence we never started to see images of our young men and women dying in the Sahara dying in the Mediterranean Sea being humiliated at the embassies of the earth while colonizers as they seek to leave our countries and the continent it was better while we waited they said which begged the question what happened and what is happening that we have so many individuals who occupy positions of leadership and yet the biggest deficit is that of leadership in Africa, you know in 1983 your own country man the late chinua wrote a little book which he could well have been writing about Africa but he focused on Nigeria the trouble with Nigeria and chinua without mincing words says the trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely a problem of leadership, whether you agree or disagree with the chinua that is another debate but he had his perspective and he was asking a question that we continue to ask about the continent of Africa, why is it that while on average 60 years after we regained independence the 55 countries that constitute the continent of Africa ,why is that that we cannot feed ourselves ? why is it that we have no faith in our institution ? we have no faith in our hostels why is it that we have no faith in our abilities ? why is it ,where has the leadership been ? why is it that so many years while politics becomes the toy that lulls us into a false sense of security .Our economies are controlled by people from other civilizations why is it?

These are uncomfortable questions which we must pose and confront and answer if the mother continent is to realize the potential why is that the mother continent is ever so negatively attractive to other civilizations you know as I talk about leadership and as I think about leadership and I think about lead what leaders are enjoying to do I think about this mother continent and many times I see how our men and women in positions of leadership are being treated by other civilization and I said oh God where are our leaders when the world congregates under the G7 there are no African leaders there the best they can do is to invite one or two and Beyond the fourth opportunity they are told to go away and go away they do when there is a meeting of the G20 it is the same thing there is no African.

Present here and many of you who are present in this assembly who are honored and respected and claimed to be leaders, that you have a duty to ensure that you are in front in order to serve , not to be served but ladies and gentlemen, lets also ask ourselves about followership. You know as a young student and many of us who are young students ,it was the culture that when you are in your first year of studies ,you must be a revolutionary and a revolutionary in the style of Karl Marx and therefore you would say ,workers of the World Unite.

You have nothing to lose, but you have changed all of us were revolutionaries and we used to say then that the safety of the visual demands that the proletariat be kept in the most profound ignorance we were revolutionaries who is the leader is he a leader who allows meta ignorance terrain Supreme amongst the people he or she is leading is it the duty of a leader to ensure that he leads men and women who are enlightened , men and women who can question what he or she is doing .

I am suggesting to us the true and sustainable leadership also required that you have a followership that is enlightened, a followership that calls you to account ,a followership that is going to make demands of you, a followership that when you say that you are going to improve the quality of their food they do not believe that agriculture stops on that day but they believe that agriculture must be intensified and the technology must be used a followership which knows that when you say you are going to deliver heaven on Earth they know that that is merely an advertisement that you are incapable of delivering

Heaven on Earth a followership that knows that when you are promising to do things within a hundred days which ordinarily can only be done in five years they know that you are a liar a followership that is capable of discerning that when you speak things there are many variables and it is the duty of a leadership to ensure that such a leadership is indeed created what do African leaders do African leaders in many African countries have now assigned the question of Education the educating their followers to NGOs and CBOs which are financed by the Americans which are financed by the Europeans which are financed by other civilization how do you think how do you imagine that the people of Denmark would have the interest of Nigeria at their heart how are you satisfied that all those civic education activities that are being undertaken in Borno in my degree or in financed by USAID.
